3/15 Strong Junior Class Set to Lead Baseball Trojans Ryan Brockschmitt
Although spring may not officially begin until March 20, everyone knows that spring really begins when baseball players first hit the diamond with their bats and gloves. This the Troy Buchanan Varsity Baseball team will officially start the 2000 season with a game against the Hannibal Pirates on March 20 at 3:30 on the opening day of the Troy Tourney. Coach Chris Chaney’s Trojans will return four starters from last season’s 11-14 team. Wade Trent (senior), Scott Pryor (junior), and Mitchell Bryant (senior) will return in the outfield and Todd Rottger will again be the man behind the plate. The combination of Trent, Pryor, and Bryant hit a combined .319 last season and accounted for 45 of the team’s 124 RBIs. Mitchell Bryant is the team’s top returning player on offense after hitting .357 with 7 home runs and seven stolen bases last season. Junior, Justin Creech will likely be the top pitcher for the Trojans with the graduation of five pitchers from last season’s team with a combined total of 136.2 innings pitched. He went 4-1 last season on the J.V. level last season with a 3.22 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings. He also batted .353 with 10 RBIs a year ago.
